Transfer Dimension Data from one computer to another

Overview of Dimension Databases

Dimension Data consists of Project data (plans & take off) & Standards data (Traces, Extensions, Layers, etc.).

Project data is typically stored in the C:\ProgramData\eTakeoffProjects\Dimension{##}ProjData.ctr file where {##} is the version number of the program. (i.e. Dimension80ProjData)

Standards data is typically stored in the C:\ProgramData\eTakeoffProjects\Dimension{##}StdsData.ctr file where {##} is the version number of the program. (i.e. Dimension80StdsData)

 

OLD COMPUTER

1. Analyze and Backup Project data

Analyze where all project folders are located

  • Click on View Tab/Project List 
  • Right Click on Project Folder Heading / Sort by "Project Folder", Ascending
  • Resize Project Folder column to view entire paths of project folders

  • If all Project folders are located under one main folder (i.e. C:\ProgramData\eTakeoffProjects), you can copy the whole folder to the Exact Same Location on the new computer and projects should sync up automatically in the program 
  • If all Projects folders are scattered through out your computer (ie: Project Folders are located on your desktop), we recommend that you backup all projects and you will need to restore projects on the new computer as needed.

Backup Project takeoff

  • Click on View Tab/Project List 
  • Click on the "Select All" button to select all of the projects

  • Click on the "Do Selected" button/Backup selected Projects
  • Click on the buttons shown below.

 

  • Click OK.
  • You may receive the message, "Unable to create export file:" on some projects because the project folder may have been deleted or moved on the computer. Click "Yes" to continue backing up.

2. Export Standards Data

  • Click on Settings/Export Standards 

  • Enter a file name for your exported file & note where you saved the file.

  • Click on the folder for Standards Database to select all standards the press the “Export” button.

 

NEW COMPUTER

3. Copy Project and Standards Data to New Computer

  • Copy Project Folders to the new computer in the same location(s) if possible
  • Copy Standards Export file on New computer to C:\ProgramData\eTakeoffProjects folder on new computer

4. Download and Install eTakeoff Dimension

5. Restore Project Data

  • Open Program 
  • If all Project folders were located under one main folder (i.e. C:\ProgramData\eTakeoffProjects) and you copied the whole folder to the Exact Same Location on the new computer, your projects and standards should have sync'ed up automatically in the program 

 

  • If your project and standards data did NOT sync up automatically, follow the procedure below
    • Click on Settings / Import Standards
    • Navigate to where the exported file is, select it and press the “Open” button.
    • Click on the folder for Standards Database to select all standards then press the “Import” button.
    • For each project, you will need to restore the project from each Project folder

    • Note: when you restore a project that already exists, eTakeoff restores a 2nd version of that project.

      To restore a project in eTakeoff, navigate to the project's folder in Windows Explorer and double click on the latest {Project}-AutoExport-{##}.tpx file. That should open eTakeoff and start the restore process.
